Writing can be a lonely process. It’s often one full of self-doubt, second-guessing and ruthless internal criticism. For many writers, these mental blocks can prevent them from ever finishing the novel they dream of, or make it take years longer than needed.

Such struggles are not unique to beginners (or anyone, for that matter). But the good news is that these struggles are not insurmountable. With the right mindset and practical techniques, anyone can overcome these mental barriers and build a productive writing mindset.

Impostor syndrome

Impostor syndrome is that feeling that you might be a fraud. That you don’t belong. That some day everyone will realise you aren’t like everyone else. It’s a common feeling that many writers share, and it can even take seasoned authors a while to overcome.

To combat impostor syndrome, focus on your growth and development rather than what you believe to be, almost certainly incorrectly, your shortcomings. What achievements have you made to get to where you are? Have you finished your novel? Had any kind of good feedback? Great, you’re an author. And nothing you say or think can change that fact.

Take the focus off external validation and direct it inward can help you to shift the narrative from ‘I don't deserve to be here’ to ‘I’ve earned my place here with my hard work and persistence.’
