Great novels have characters with meaningful change. It’s one of the hardest aspects of writing to really crack, ensuring that the arc of your character feels true and earned.

I’ve been working on a resource to hep you with this, and it’s something I started with my most recent novel. I found that it was hard for me to envision the true change that my characters were going through, and wanted to create something to help break it down.

I was developing the plot, and there were some changes, but it wasn’t completely clear to me. What needed to change? Why did they change?

So, I created this worksheet for you to map a character’s change throughout the novel. It’s split into seven stages, but you can adapt and modify this as much as you need—even reword the stages if you’d like.

The sheet will help you establish:

  • The character’s emotional state at key moments.

  • The decisions they make and how they reveal growth or regression.

  • The relationship changes that reflect or provoke change.
